xTool S1

xTool S1 upgrades & accessories actually worth buying

The S1 does not need every accessory in the catalogue. We rank upgrades by whether they improve process control, safety, material capability or a real production bottleneck.

What we would buy first

1. Extraction route — specify venting/filtration before convenience accessories.

2. Air assist — if cutting quality and charring are recurring issues.

3. Honeycomb panel — for sheet cutting and controlled underside airflow.

4. Rotary — only if cylindrical parts are real workload.

5. 1064 nm IR module — if metal/plastic marking is recurring; otherwise consider whether an F-series machine is the better architecture.

The base S1 is already a complete machine

The S1 is an enclosed Class 1 diode platform with switchable laser modules, a working area around 498 × 319/330 mm and up to 600 mm/s. That means the first question for every accessory should be: what measured limitation does this remove? Adding everything in the ecosystem can easily turn a rational mid-range machine into a much more expensive workstation without changing the jobs you can sell.

Use the base machine as the reference process. Add hardware only when the job requires it.

1. Smart Air Assist — high value for cutting

Air assist helps clear smoke and vapour from the kerf, limits local flaming and can reduce edge contamination. It is therefore much more defensible on repeated cutting jobs than on light surface engraving. xTool’s Smart Air Assist can automatically vary airflow on compatible machines including S1.

Process gas flow is one of the variables that changes cut quality, charring and contamination near the focal region.

D&L view: Recommended for users who actually cut sheet material regularly.

2. Honeycomb panel — useful support, not magic accuracy

A honeycomb work support allows downward airflow and gives the beam somewhere to pass after breaking through the workpiece. It can reduce backside scorching compared with placing sheet directly on a solid surface, but the support geometry can still influence smoke deposition and reflected energy.

A practical workholding/support accessory for repeated sheet cutting.

D&L view: Recommended for cutting-heavy S1 use.

3. RA2 Pro — buy only for cylindrical geometry

Rotary capability is transformational when the product is a tumbler, tube, ring or other cylindrical/axisymmetric workpiece. It contributes nothing to flat sheet throughput. We would therefore treat it as a job-specific fixture, not a default accessory bundle.

Rotary fixture for cylindrical and ring-shaped work.

D&L view: Recommended only when rotary work is part of the actual product mix.

4. 1064 nm IR module — potentially valuable, but compare the architecture

The S1 IR module gives the enclosed platform a route into finer marking on metals and plastics. That can be an efficient way to expand an existing S1. But if metal/plastic marking is going to become a high-volume process, a galvo F-series machine offers a much smaller marking field but far higher scan speed and a workflow designed around marking rather than sheet cutting.

A useful way to extend an S1 into metal/plastic marking without buying a second machine.

D&L view: Good expansion for occasional marking; compare F2/F1 Ultra for production marking.

5. Extraction — choose the control strategy, then the hardware

An inline fan and an air purifier solve different problems. IF2 is fundamentally a duct-flow/exhaust device: it moves contaminated air through ducting. AP2 is a multi-stage filtration unit intended to remove particulate and adsorb some gaseous/odour components. If you can safely discharge outdoors at an appropriate location, direct extraction is often simpler. If external discharge is impractical, filtration becomes more important and brings ongoing filter-life/verification questions.

6. Fire Safety Set — additional mitigation, not unattended operation

xTool’s current Fire Safety Set uses CO₂ extinguishing on compatible enclosed machines including S1, while detection/alarm/power-off rely on the machine’s safety system. We view this as additional risk reduction rather than a reason to leave a laser operating without appropriate supervision and procedures.

D&L view: Useful additional mitigation for qualifying machines; not a substitute for material control and supervision.

Our S1 upgrade order

Extraction → air assist → honeycomb → job-specific rotary/IR → additional fire mitigation. That order prioritises process control and safety before convenience.

Frequently asked questions

What xTool S1 accessory should I buy first?

Air assist and an appropriate work support/honeycomb are the first accessories to consider for cutting. Extraction and fire-risk controls should be planned as part of the workshop setup, not added only after problems appear.

Is the 1064 nm IR module worth it for S1?

It is useful when you need better marking interaction with metals and some plastics than the blue diode provides. It does not turn S1 into a high-power fibre engraving machine.

Do I need the RA2 Pro rotary?

Only if cylindrical work such as tumblers, rings or round components is part of your actual workload. It adds capability but no benefit to flat-sheet production.
